With a diverse background in fashion, product development and competitive college sports, Alexis Anton was seeking an MBA program that would combine these interests into a viable career path. She found it at Bowling Green State University, where she graduated from the Online MBA – Supply Chain Management program in December 2024.
“I was exploring five or six different schools. I needed an accredited MBA concentration that pairs with fashion. Bowling Green has this amazing supply chain concentration that I could get in two years,” said Alexis.
The reputation of the school and the fact that her mother, aunts, uncles, brother and cousins attended BGSU were key factors in her choice. “I wanted [a university] that people recognized. If they saw it on a piece of paper, they maybe had a connection to that school. There’s a lot of value in that,” she explained.
“What really finalized the decision was the flexibility of start time. I started halfway between the fall semester, and I was shocked that was even an option. If you wait too long to start, it’s really hard to feel inspired to actually start,” Alexis said.
She took two courses each term during the two years of her supply chain management degree online program, while continuing to work as a technical uniform designer for the U.S. Air Force & Space Force, where she develops precise fit and function to meet military requirements. Alexis was impressed by how immediately she could apply skills from the program to her job. “I realized early on how functional everything that I was learning was to what I was already doing. That was exactly what I was looking for as a student and a professional,” said Alexis.
The online MBA program also gave her key skills for supply chain management along with more confidence and the ability to communicate on a more succinct, professional level with her peers and management. “I am younger than a lot of the people I work with. [Having my MBA] allowed the people around me to respect that I was trying to fix processes and that I knew what I was talking about,” she said. “The second you have a few more letters added to your name, you have already put yourself in a position where people are going to respect you and trust what you say a little more.”
While completing her supply chain management degree online, Alexis said that she began to naturally assume leadership roles. “I was put up for a promotion before I even finished the program. If you know anything about the government, you know that it moves quite slowly,” she said. Her promotion to Senior Technical Designer became effective just a few months after completing her MBA.
Online But Not Alone: BGSU Support and Connections
Virtual collaboration with fellow students made Alexis feel like she was part of a team, which reminded her of the camaraderie she felt as an athlete during her undergraduate years. “My favorite part was getting to actually work with my classmates. People were so willing to work together and find time to create a great final product rather than just do the bare minimum.”
She also valued the support of her professors. “Faculty was awesome. It’s such a large university but I would get an email back or a call or whatever I needed in 20 minutes.”
Alexis wholeheartedly recommends the BGSU MBA program to anyone looking to take their career to the next level. “The biggest growth I’ve seen in myself is this ability to assess issues and move on,” she explained. “You can see an exponential difference [in coworkers with master’s degrees] in their approach. You are able to articulate your thoughts in a way that’s so much clearer and more concise.”
She added, “This program is so accessible and available to any career path. There’s value in learning how to adapt, communicate, understand how to manage and work with people better.”
